Did You Know?

The quest to create light, on which all life depends, has preoccupied mankind since the taming of fire 125,000 years ago. The burning of combustibles (wood, tallow, wax, whale oil and refined petroleum) prevailed until in 1878 heated solids (Edison’s tungsten filaments) briefly intervened as did heated gases after 1902 (helium, argon and krypton collectively known as neon).

Finally, in 1927 the utilization of solid materials to produce light was contemplated and in 1960 solid state light emitting diodes were invented, gaining in efficiency and prevalence to this day. Technological advances may expand the production and uses of light but domestic styles from the 20th, 19th and even the18th century remain in fashion. Kerosene lanterns may have been convert firstly to gas and then to electricity but at Legacy we celebrate them all.
