Antique & Vintage Sawed Beams
Reclaimed or salvaged antique & vintage sawed beams for general construction or heritage home restoration needs
Our vintage sawed lumber often bears circular markings of the massive rip-saws found in early water driven sawmills. Some markings may be interpreted as the straight kerf marks of a tow-man pit saw. All of our sawn lumber has the unmistakable luster of a deep patina available only through aging. When enhanced by a light sanding and clear coating this lumber displays nail holes, stains some insect scars and occasional beam pockets and through-mortises.
Typically the lumber is pine or hemlock if sourced from rural or residential uses but commercial buildings such as mills and warehouses sometimes render southern yellow pine (if very early) but more probably Douglas Fir. These species were utilized for heavier members and longer spans.
The sawn lumber and beams are typically “full” sizes (cut to the nearest inch). However, because the sawer’s graceless machinery was not always accurate, variations occur. Lumber and beams are priced to the nearest inch.
